Travel underwater and back in time in National Geographic's upcoming Titanic: Unsolved Mystery

Updated Mar 27, 2012, 9:01am

Nat Geo Games is at it again, and with the help of Polish designer PlayWay, has taken a famous historical event and transformed it into what looks to be an immersive gaming experience. This time, the company’s upcoming Titanic: Unsolved Mystery will allow players to enter the world’s first “ocean floor museum” (the remains of the Titanic having been surrounded in a large dome and now being available to tour) where they’ll find the ability to travel back and forth through time to uncover the remaining mysteries of the doomed ocean liner.

Players will help a young woman named Lillian explore the last moments of her great-grandmother’s life, who was killed during the Titanic’s disastrous sinking 100 year ago. You’ll be able to explore both modern day and past Titanic environments, and since Nat Geo Games is involved, we can expect plenty of realism to be combined with the expected creative liberty.

Titanic: Unsolved Mystery will offer 31 different locations and 15 hidden object scenes to explore, along with nine mini-games to complete along the way. With the combination of realistic graphics and real archival photographs from the ship, PlayWay has apparently used Nat Geo’s expertise wisely to create as true-to-life an experience as we could expect from a fictional video game.

Titanic: Unsolved Mystery is set to launch on multiple platforms in the second quarter of this year. We can expect the game to be released for PC, Mac, iOS and Android, so while an exact release date is unknown as of this writing, you can follow the game right here on Gamezebo to be the first to know when you can dive underwater to explore the hidden mysteries of the Titanic.

PlayWay and National Geographics Games

WASHINGTON / WARSAW, Poland (March 21, 2012)—PlayWay and National Geographic Games announce the development of “Titanic: Unsolved Mystery,” an interactive video game that will transport players to 1912, the year the Titanic sank, to explore the ship virtually and search for hidden objects. The game, coming to PC, Mac, iOS and Android in the second quarter of 2012, allows players to learn about the sinking of the Titanic and see what the famous ship looked like inside.

Play begins with the opening of the world’s first ocean-floor museum. Gamers can jump between the present and past as they help the game’s heroine, Lillian, discover the Titanic’s mysteries and get closer to unveiling the truth behind the disaster that took her great-grandmother’s life 100 years ago. The game, intended for casual adult gamers, will be available for purchase and download for PC and Mac on, for iOS on the Apple App Store and for Android on Google Play. A demo, screenshots and more information are available at

“National Geographic is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in a big way, and this game, which will allow players to experience what life was like on the ship, is a key part of the broader effort,” said Chris Mate, National Geographic’s vice president and general manager, Games.

“We are proud to work with National Geographic and be a part of the Society’s comprehensive effort to commemorate this important historical event,” said Krzysztof Kostowski, CEO of PlayWay.

“Titanic: Unsolved Mystery” features sophisticated visuals and design, including historically accurate images of the ship’s exterior and interior, and beautiful hidden-object scenes. In addition to imagery, the game includes a high-quality soundtrack with atmospheric ambient sounds.

The 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking is the focus of a major National Geographic cross-divisional effort in the coming months. In addition to a National Geographic Museum exhibition, the cover story for the April issue of National Geographic magazine will focus on Titanic. The National Geographic Channel will air two new specials: “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron,” on April 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and “Save the Titanic with Robert Ballard,” on April 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Also available will be digital books and home videos. Information on all of National Geographic’s Titanic offerings will be posted at
